What are PE pipe fittings?
PE pipe fittings are connection accessories used in conjunction with PE pipes, and are mainly used for pipe connection, diversion, diversion, transition, etc. in water supply, gas, agricultural irrigation, sewage and other systems.
Types of PE Pipe Fittings – Classified by Connection Method and Function
PE (Polyethylene) pipe fittings are essential components in piping systems for water supply, gas distribution, and industrial applications. These fittings are categorized based on how they connect to PE pipes and their structural functions. This guide explains all major types of PE pipe fittings, with common models and application scenarios.
I. Classification by Connection Method
1. Butt Fusion Fittings
Butt fusion is a welding technique used for medium to large diameter PE pipes, ideal for high-pressure systems.
Common Types:
Butt Fusion Elbow (90° / 45°)
Butt Fusion Tee
Butt Fusion Reducer
Butt Fusion Flange Adapter
Applications:
Municipal water supply projects
Industrial and mining drainage systems
2. Electrofusion Fittings
Electrofusion fittings use built-in resistance wires to melt and fuse the fitting with the PE pipe. They are suitable for underground pipeline repairs and gas piping systems.
Common Types:
Electrofusion Coupler
Electrofusion Elbow
Electrofusion Tee
Electrofusion Reducer
Electrofusion Flange Adapter, End Cap
Applications:
PE gas pipeline networks
High-standard drinking water supply systems
3. Socket Fusion Fittings
Socket fusion is commonly used for small-diameter PE pipes. The pipe and fitting are heated and then socketed together.
Common Types:
Socket Fusion Elbow
Socket Fusion Tee
Socket Fusion Coupler
Socket Threaded Adapter (Male/Female)
Applications:
Household plumbing
Small-scale water distribution systems
4. Mechanical Fittings
Mechanical fittings are non-welded, easy-to-install components ideal for temporary or movable PE pipe connections.
Common Types:
Compression Fittings
Quick Couplings
Clamp Saddle Fittings
Applications:
Agricultural irrigation systems
Temporary water supply setups
Field repairs
II. Classification by Function
1. Same-size Fittings
Used to connect PE pipes of the same diameter for smooth and continuous flow.
Examples:
Equal Tee
Equal Elbow
Equal Coupler
2. Reducing Fittings
Used to connect pipes of different diameters, allowing smooth transitions and pressure control.
Examples:
Reducing Tee
Reducer Coupling
Reducing Elbow
3. Transition Fittings
Designed to connect PE pipes with other materials, such as metal pipes, valves, and pumps.
Examples:
Male/Female Threaded Brass Insert Fittings
PE to Flange Adapter
PE pipe joining procedure
If you plan to join PE pipes, you need to hire a professional to do it. If you handle the PE pipe joining procedure yourself, follow these steps:
Step 1: Prepare a flat surface to place the pipe. Leave a 20 mm cutting allowance.
Step 2: Select a suitable clamp for clamping. The choice of clamp depends on the type of pipe you are using.
Step 3: Center the end faces of the pipes to be welded. It is important to ensure that the offset does not exceed 10% to avoid poor welding results.
Step 4: The next step is to heat the two pipes, and the heating temperature is between 2100-2300 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the season. The recommended melting length for each pipe is 1-2 mm.
Step 5: Remove the heating plate and bring the two pipe ends into contact. Make sure to maintain the required pressure. The switching process should not take too long.
Step 6: Let the welded pipes cool, but make sure to maintain the butt pressure.
Hot melting is the process of heating two PE pipes using a hot melt machine.
Electric fusion is the process of installing a heating wire and connecting it to the outer pipe column.
Welding connection is the process of connecting PE pipes together using a welding machine.
From butt fusion to mechanical fittings, each type of PE pipe fitting serves a unique purpose in modern pipeline installations. Whether you’re designing a high-pressure municipal network or a simple irrigation system, choosing the right fittings ensures system integrity and long-term performance.
