Which PVC drain pipe is quieter?
In building drainage systems, noise pollution is a common concern, often caused by water flow impact, pipe vibration, and airflow turbulence. To address this issue, PVC silencer pipes have been developed, with two popular options on the market: PVC spiral silencer drain pipes and PVC double-wall hollow spiral silencer drain pipes. This article compares their structural differences, mechanical properties, and application scenarios to help determine which pipe offers better noise reduction.

1. The source of noise in building drainage?

The noise of PVC drain pipes mainly comes from water flow impact, pipe vibration and air flow turbulence. When water flows into the pipe from a high place or encounters elbows and tees, it will produce obvious impact sounds, and the vibration of the pipe wall will also spread through the bracket and wall, amplifying the noise impact.

In addition, when water flows through the pipe at high speed, it is easy to mix with air to form turbulence, causing bubble rupture and air vortex, further increasing noise.

In order to reduce the noise transmission in building drainage, PVC silencer pipes came into being. At present, the more common ones on the market are "PVC spiral silencer pipes" and "PVC double-wall hollow spiral silencer pipes". Let's compare them in detail below.

2. Comparison of pipe structure

●PVC spiral silencer drain pipe:

The inner wall of the pipe is made of spiral ribs, which are evenly distributed in a straight line and obliquely, and the angle with the center line of the silencer pipe is 8°-20°. When draining, the water flows along the inner wall of the pipe under the guidance of the spiral ribs, and will not have a strong impact on its inner wall. It can reduce 8-10 decibels compared with the standard solid wall pipe, which has the effect of noise reduction and silencing.

PVC double-wall hollow spiral silencer drain pipe:

As the name suggests, the structure of the double-wall hollow spiral pipe is a double-layer design, including the inner wall and the outer wall. The unique hollow layer design enables the pipeline system to obtain double silencers when transmitting noise and vibration, thereby greatly improving the sound insulation effect.

3. Comparison of mechanical properties

●PVC spiral silencer drain pipe:

On the premise of maintaining the basic strength of the PVC solid wall pipe, the spiral structure can enhance the rigidity of the pipe and reduce the deformation that may occur during the use of the pipe. The fluid is affected by the spiral inner wall when passing through, and has a certain noise reduction or anti-scouring effect.

●PVC double-wall hollow spiral silencer drain pipe:

The double-wall hollow structure forms a design similar to an I-beam, which makes the pipe have higher bending stiffness, can better resist external pressure and reduce deformation. Compared with the inner spiral pipe with a single-layer structure, the hollow wall design can disperse stress and improve the overall stability of the pipe.
